Have you ever woken up and stubbed your toe right away? Then you hobble over to the coffee maker while cursing your nightstand for being in your way only to find that it’s broken. You feel like your day could not get any worse and it has only just begun!
This is the worst. Starting your day out bad sets a tone for the whole rest of the day and that negative energy will seep into everything you say and do.
Here are five things you can do to start your day over and set a new positive tone.
Luckily, you are the only one in control of your day, and no matter what happens, you have the choice to start your day over at any time.
1. Make a gratitude list.
There is nothing that puts life into perspective better than remembering what you are thankful for.
I suggest taking just five minutes to reflect on 5 things you feel blessed to have in your life.
This should not be hard because there is so much we all have that we take for granted everyday. Some of the things that top my gratitude list are:
- My health.
- Loving family and friends.
- A home to live in.
- Good food to eat.
- The freedom to be myself everyday.
This is a quick and easy way to feel better right away!
2. Do something nice for someone else.
When you decide to do something nice for someone else you immediately stop focusing on your own problems.
This does not have to be a huge gesture or gift, just something simple that you know someone will appreciate and will help you get your day back on track.
- Maybe on your way to work you grab coffee (because your machine is broken) for yourself and for a co-worker.
- Another thing you can do is choose 5 random people to smile at and give a compliment to.
When you choose to brighten some else’s day, yours will be brightened as well.
3. Practice affirmations.
Positive self-affirmations can be a very powerful tool to turn your day around at any time. **It only takes a few minutes to get yourself in a quiet meditative state and recite affirmations
.**
A few examples of what you could say might be...
- “I choose to restart my day now.”
- “I am going to have a bright and joyful day.”
It is amazing the power that just a few short affirmations can have on your attitude and on your whole day!
4. Exercise.
It is a scientific fact that exercise releases endorphins into the body. Endorphins then trigger a positive feeling in the body helping to change your bad mood into a good one.
Getting your heart pumping will also increase blood flow throughout your whole body helping you to feel energized and alert.
Besides the scientific reason, I like to exercise when I am having a bad day because it helps me to feel good about myself like I have accomplished something. This is also something that can be quick and easy like a ten-minute power walk.

5. Treat yourself.
If you are really stuck in a rut and cannot get out of your bad day mood I suggest you treat yourself to something you enjoy.
There are many different ways you might choose to treat yourself when you are having a bad day.
- You could go out to lunch instead of eating at work.
- You could pamper yourself with a manicure or a massage.
- You could give yourself permission to buy something at the mall.
Treating yourself however does not always have to cost money. Sometimes is a treat just to set aside time to relax and watch a movie in the evening.
Whatever your way of treating yourself, it is sure to turn a bad day into a positive one!
